Basic Skincare Routine to Kickstart Your Skin Journey

Since 2020, we have seen a shift in makeup trends. Instead of heavy coverage and bold colours, makeup lovers have opted for a more natural look instead. This “clean” makeup trend is meant to enhance their natural beauty, where their supple, healthy skin is the centre of the look. Hence, having a good basic skincare routine is more important than ever. However, with all the skincare products currently on the market, it can be confusing to start your skin journey. Not to worry; Flokq is here to help. Here is a guide for a basic 3-step skincare routine for both morning and night.

Morning Basic Skincare Routine

There are three steps that you should include in your basic skincare routine in the morning, and that includes cleansing, moisturizing, and protecting your skin.

1. Cleanse

To start off your basic skincare routine in the morning, the first thing you need to do is clean your face with a cleanser. As Shooken explained in Allure, cleansing your face in the morning will help you remove any evidence of swear or oil left from your pillow and hair during your sleep. When choosing a cleanser for your face, opt for a gentle, hydrating, and low-foaming cleanser. This is because cleansers that create bigger bubbles are more drying on the skin. In addition, try to look for cleansers with no fragrance and only has minimal ingredients to avoid irritation, especially if you’re not used to using products on your skin. We recommend you to try CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser.

2. Moisturize

The next step in your basic skincare routine is moisturizing. Whether you have dry or oily skin, moisturizing is a very important step in a skincare routine. This is because when your skin lacks hydration, it can create oil to make up for the lack of moisture on your skin. Thus, that excessive oil can in turn create acne across your skin. When choosing a moisturizer, pick one that is oil-free and fragrance-free, with ingredients that are good for the skin. Those ingredients include hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and vitamin C. If you’re an oily-skinned gal or guy, you should also opt for a non-comedogenic moisturizer. For a good moisturizer by a local brand, we recommend Ceramic Skin Saviour Moisturizer Gel by SOMETHINC.

3. Protect

The final step in your basic skincare routine in the morning is perhaps the most crucial one, which is putting on sunscreen on top of your moisturizer. Sunscreen is extremely important as it is your first protection against skin cancer from the sun’s UV rays. Sunscreen can also prevent your skin from breaking out and wrinkling at an early age. Whether you choose a chemical or a mineral-based sunscreen, it isn’t important; both will work well for your skin. Just make sure it’s at least SPF 30! We recommend Glowscreen SPF 40 by Supergoop, as it leaves no white cast on your skin!

Night Basic Skincare Routine

At night, your basic skincare routine should also include three steps. However, instead of only cleansing your face with a cleanser, you should double cleanse, and you should put on a repairing serum across your skin before you moisturize it. The steps are as follows: double cleansing, putting on serum, and moisturizing. You can use the same moisturizer like the one you use in the morning!

4. Double Cleanse

Before washing your face with your CeraVe cleanser at night, be sure to cleanse it first with a cleansing oil, a milk cleanser, or micellar water. This is an important step in a basic skincare routine for the nighttime, especially if you put on makeup for the day. Cleansing your face before washing it again with a cleanser will ensure your face is thoroughly clean from makeup and dirt from the air. Thus, it’s an effective step to prevent your skin from breaking out. We recommend Bioderma’s Sensibio H2O, which is great for any skin type but especially sensitive skin!

5. Repair

Before you put on your moisturizer at night, putting on a repairing serum is a great way to improve how your skin looks and feels. Applying a serum at night can give the skin enough time to soak them in and start to repair itself without being exposed to pollutants, as explained in Today. For beginners, you can try The Ordinary’s Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion. It features next-generation retinoid actives. Hence, it can improve skin’s tone and texture, and thus, potential fine lines and wrinkles will be reduced in the long run.

Starting your skin journey can be difficult. But remember, in skincare, sometimes less is more! Therefore, it’s good for you to start with a 3-step basic skincare routine like this. Don’t worry if you’re not seeing immediate results, either. After all, persistency is key. Good luck!
