When in North Jakarta: Things to Do

North Jakarta is one of the five administrative cities which form the Special Capital Region of Jakarta. As a river called Ciliwung in North Jakarta used to be the main port for the kingdom of Tarumanegara back in the days, it made North Jakarta a city that is full of historical sites and artifacts. The colonial Dutch legacy is still there for you to see at the Old Town and the Sunda Kelapa harbor which once used to be the main port of the Sunda Kingdom. Although Sunda Kelapa is no longer striving like it used to, Jakarta has its origins in Sunda Kelapa and it played a significant role in the city’s development.

1. Museum Bahari Jakarta

Museum Bahari Jakarta is located within Jakarta Old Town, the historic center of Jakarta. Museum Bahari Jakarta is a museum that displays models of fishing boats and other maritime objects from different parts of Indonesia. The museum was built in a used warehouse that belongs to Dutch East Indian and located near the Ciliwung River. The museum exhibits the celebrated Pinisi schooners of the Bugis people of South Sulawesi, which at present make up one of the last sea-going sailing fleets in the world.

Museum Bahari Jakarta carries a lot of stuff to exhibits, but mostly focuses on the importance of the sea to the economy of Indonesia and the history of maritime in Indonesia, but there are displays of Dutch East Indian ship models and cannons. Aside from the maritime history of Indonesia, the museum also displays “Biological Oceanography” to show the diversity of everything that lives under the coastal areas of Indonesia.

2. Dunia Fantasi

Dunia Fantasi is the most popular amusement park in Jakarta. Well, you can say that Dunia Fantasi is Jakarta’s answer to Disneyland. If you want to have some fun, you might want to give Dunia Fantasi a try to satisfy your fun needs. Dunia Fantasi is a great choice if you are looking for something fun to do with your kids.

The amusement park is very wide, as it is 20 hectares. The amusement park is divided into 9 regions, such as Kawasan Jakarta, Kawasan Indonesia, Kawasan Eropa, Kawasan Fantasi Hikayat, Kawasan Fantasi Yunani, Kawasan Amerika, Kawasan Istana, Kawasan Asia, and the newest one, Kawasan Dunia Kartun. The division of the region is carried out to stimulate the visitor’s imagination to feel like they are traveling into each named region.

Each region has different amusement rides and most of them are height-related, which means most of the rides take place at a high altitude and it is very exciting! However, if you are traveling with little kids, you might want to avoid going on extreme rides instead you can opt on kids-friendly rides, such as theatre simulator, magic show, and many others.

3. Sea World Jakarta

Sea World Jakarta is a marine aquarium located in Ancol, North Jakarta. Sea World Jakarta wishes to provide education about the marine world with its huge area of a marine aquarium. You can visit the marine aquarium your little ones, to get them to know and be familiar with sea creatures. As in Jakarta, you might not get a lot of opportunities to play with sea creatures.

In each display, there’s a board that will tell you what’s inside the display and everything you need to know about them. Sea World Jakarta has over 7300 freshwater biotas consisting of 48 species of fish and 1 species of reptile and has over 11500 species of marine biota consisting of 138 species of fish and invertebrates and 3 species of reptiles. The marine aquarium has 28 displays which consist of 9 freshwater aquariums and 19 aquariums and 4 open pools. Each display has its own designated theme to ease visitors to absorbs the information that is given about the biotas.

Sea World Jakarta often hold events at the venue, such as feeding show. If you wish to interact closer with the biotas, there is a Touch Pool, where you are allowed to touch them.

4. Pulau Bidadari

Pulau Bidadari is one of the most famous islands among the many islands in Kepulauan Seribu. If you want to go to Pulau Bidadari, you can depart from Marina Dock in Ancol and it will take about 30 minutes with speedboat to arrive at Pulau Bidadari. As the location is not too far from the dock, there are several people who visit Pulau Bidadari using jetski.

The best thing about visiting Pulau Bidadari is that you can just go on a one-day tour because it is located very near to Jakarta. Most of the one-day tour that is offered includes transport facility, lunch, water sport (banana boat/ water sofa), a visit to 3 nearby islands such as Pulau Khayangan, Pulau Onrust, and Pulau Kelor, bicycle rent, and a ticket to Fantastic Eco-park Parade in Ancol.

Aside from feeling the sea breeze and playing at the sea, you can sightsee some historical sites at Pulau Bidadari. If you wish to have an overnight stay at the Pulau Bidadari, there are some cottages on the island and most of them are floating cottage! Exciting, right?
