Popular Bars in Menteng

Menteng has been one of the most popular districts in Jakarta—mainly because of its history dating back to the Dutch colonial era, but also because it’s home to several elite residential lots. The buildings’ architectures are closely resembled to those of old European homes, emitting a cozy and classical feel in every inch of their structures. Menteng has also been a witness for various historical events throughout the years; one of them being the making of the proclamation text by our founding fathers: Soekarno and Hatta.

Aside from its unique historical values, Menteng is also home to some of public parks in Jakarta. Taman Suropati and Taman Menteng (Taman means park, in Bahasa) are two of them.

Because of this, many have opted to open bars in this area—and while some of them fell short against the others, a couple of venues in Menteng are popular among the locals and young expats alike. Here are five best bars in Menteng if you happen to be in the area:

Melly’s Garden

Melly’s Garden offers a quick, refreshing break from all those city hecticness to bask yourselves in this Indonesian-heritage themed bar. Meaning? You get to enjoy a wide selection of Western to Javan dishes while sipping lightly on your favorite choice of cocktail. Aside from alcohol, this place also sells specialty Indonesian coffee and casual bites, making it a hip venue to hang out with your friends at any time of day. For those looking for a quick break from those bars with loud music or strobe lights, this place is a must-visit.

We recommend tasting their Aloha Meli (Hello Honey in Hawaiian), a prudent clash between the strength of a vodka and the sweet melon liqueur. A mix we never knew could exist!

The Jaya Pub

The Jaya Pub, just like Menteng, emits an oldies-vibe originating from the 80s. Loosely modeled after European pubs in the late 20^th century, the Jaya Pub is also proudly renowned as one of the oldest—if not the oldest—bars in Jakarta. Because of this, most of their regulars are people from their late forties to fifties. Oldies music fills the air with nostalgic vibe as visitors are taken into the past during their time to unwind.

To say that the Jaya Pub is a legend would be an understatement in itself. Having witnessed the comings and goings of their past competitors, they’re still the preferred destination for some people—making it competitive even amongst the novel nightclubs and modern discotheques.

If you’re looking for another rooftop bar to reference to, here’s one of Jakarta’s most popular bars: SKYE. Both a classy lounge and a prudent fine-dining restaurant, SKYE offers guests with a view of Jakarta’s skyline from the 56^th floor of BCA Tower. Because this place offers a fancy, classy experience, an appropriate smart-casual dress code is also required to enter. That means no slippers, t-shirts, nor shorts!

Whilst offering a wide selection of appetizers, entrees, and desserts, we highly recommend their specialty SKYE Tiramisu for those with sweet tooth.

There’s also a wide selection of pastas and pizzas, along with local Indonesian delicacies as main course.

Bearing this in mind, it’s no doubt that Camden often attracts locals and foreigners because of their extensive menu. You might wanna try their Spicy Linguine Vongole—theirs is one of the best we’ve ever tasted.
