4 Best Teahouses in West Jakarta

Like Jakarta’s many other hip cafe districts, West Jakarta is a treasure trove of heritage teahouses and adorable tea rooms. To make things more unique, teahouses in Jakarta also serve healthy dishes to go with tea, said to be ‘the divine herb’ by the Chinese scholar Xu Guangqi.

If you love tea as much as we do, be sure to visit all these teahouses and learn about their histories and their creed!

1. Pantjoran Tea House

We can’t get enough of tea parlors with rich historical and cultural backgrounds. This time, we’re introducing the Pantjoran Tea House in Glodok, Jakarta’s celebrated Chinatown. Pantjoran Tea House won our hearts just through their introduction page: “We are a tea shop, but also a tour guide – to share our humble space, our years of learnings and our leaf of history.” That mission is reflected in its interior design, which takes you back to the Chinese teahouses of olden times. Fun fact: the teahouse building used to be Apotheek Chung Hwa, Batavia’s (Jakarta’s old name) second pharmacy to open. 

Staying true to its Chinese heritage, Pantjoran Tea House sources their tea from Chinese mountains and fields of Taiwan. Their specialties are the Jasmine “Pantjoran” tea, Refreshing Oolong, and Earl Grey Crush. Of course, you get to enjoy your drink of choice with 26 types of Dimsum and other full dishes. Recommendations include the hit Tahu Lada Garam and their Lumpia Bola Seafood.

2. Tsujiri Tea House

We’re also a sucker for centuries-old Japanese teahouses. The Tsujiri Tea House first opened in Kyoto just several years short of the Meiji Restoration, precisely in 1860. Now, the long-standing teahouse has landed in West Jakarta to introduce their trademarked matcha, with menus ranging from matcha served piping hot to soft ice cream served with mochi. Tsujiri’s casual atmosphere makes it the perfect stop after a whole day of shopping or for talks with friends.

If you’re a fan of authentic Japanese matcha (or have been to a Japanese tea ceremony and want to experience that bitterness again), we recommend their Signature O-matcha. They prepare this hot beverage in the traditional Japanese method and free of sugar, very distant from the usual ‘matcha’ drinks you encounter in Indonesia. Another recommendation is the Shiratama Parfait with O-matcha serve, which harmonizes the bitterness of matcha and the fresh sweetness of red bean paste.

3. Honu West

Another worthwhile tea specialist at Neo SOHO is the Honu West, a poke and matcha bar. Its interior design is reminiscent of minimalistic Japanese cafes, making it the perfect place for a light afternoon meal with friends or a post-shopping chat over a delicious tea. Also, there’s just something about their dishwares that tap into Japanese imperfectly perfect aesthetics while simultaneously reminding us of tropical restaurants. 

Honu West is a friendly place for matcha-lovers, both the staunch believers of bitter, authentic matcha and casual matcha lovers who prefer sweeter drinks. They have the Opening Ceremony Matcha, which, as its name suggests, is ceremonial grade matcha whisked with bamboo chasen. Meanwhile, fans of sweeter matcha drinks can try their matcha latte and spiced matcha latte (you can even trade dairy milk for soy!)

Did we mention poke bowls? You can pick from a wide variety of Poke bowls from the menu. Although nothing quite beats the Salmon Poke bowl (available in white sauce or shoyu dressing).

4. Rumah Juliet

Rumah Juliet’s history is as sweet as the cakes it serves. Vivian Amelia, its founder, worked on an assignment on movie reports and eventually came across the 2010 romantic comedy Letters to Juliet. In the movie, the main heroine, played by Amanda Seyfried, visits Verona and steps inside the House of Juliet, where women of all ages and walks of life write to Juliet for relationship advice through notes tucked behind the house walls. 

Vivian felt touched by the notion and decided to open her own Juliet house where she invites guests to write to Juliet. There are pens, vintage writing paper, and envelopes attached to each table —with secret codes! How is that not cute? Now, Rumah Juliet stands out as one of the few vegan cafes in Jakarta that balances the ultimate cozy cafe experience with healthy eating, making it popular with ladies, young and old. 

It’s home to various affordable Oolong blends as well as the ever-popular blooming Chinese tea. Rumah Juliet also prides itself on serving beautiful Vegan cakes, served daily.
