4 Best Teahouses in East Jakarta

Unlike in South, West, North, and Central Jakarta, the indie artisanal tea industry has yet to take off in East Jakarta. You’d need a lot of effort and sheer good luck to find a gem among bubble tea franchises (which don’t always deliver what we tea aficionados want) and coffee shops (which most often than not only have four tea choices or even fewer). So, don’t be disappointed if you haven’t found that classic tea menu.

Luckily, after much struggle and pure diligence, we managed to dig up notable tea houses in East Jakarta. Half of them are franchises, while the other half are individual cafes with their own flairs and images. And honestly, we’re impressed with what these establishments have to offer, from nostalgic 1950-ish parlors to ultramodern cafes. So, get ready to delve into East Jakarta’s offering of tea houses, all at wonderfully affordable prices and rewarding experiences

1. KOPILOT Coffeehouse and Kitchen

We’re a fan of Indonesian post-independence movies and were pleasantly surprised with Kopilot’s interior design, which screams late 1950s Indonesian traveling culture with its vintage furniture and photos as well as the hanging airplane model that reminds us of the early Garuda Indonesia models. Of course, this atmosphere is at its best during the day when the lighting is minimal. In the evenings, it’s a bright, crowded cafe with patrons young and old pouring in. With its affordable yet varied menu, KOPILOT makes the perfect hangout on Saturday nights or a cafe-hopping experience with coffee-addicted buddies

KOPILOT’s specialty is indeed its coffee, but it shouldn’t stop you from checking out their collection of tea. From the recently popular sweet Thai Tea to refreshing mixes like Grenadin Tea. We also recommend Tisane Tea for those who prefer a more organic experience. Sometimes they also offer original teas for you to choose from in tubes.

2. Fore Coffee Cibubur Junction

The mid-to-late 2010s saw a lot of change to Indonesia’s local coffee and tea industry. Forget old, stationary cafes where you need to line up to get a sip of their ‘legendary’ coffee, now we have chain stores! One of these is Fore Coffee, a prominent coffee and tea franchise that managed to spread its reach beyond Jakarta.

Fore Coffee’s dine-in outlets, including the one in Cibubur Junction, have a sleek, white interior design that’s reminiscent of those stylized labs in sci-fi or kids’ films. The Cibubur Junction store, in particular, has the atmosphere of a luxury electronic store that draws you in with its exclusive feel. We also  can’t get enough of their simple but prettily designed teacups —they make us want to take them home and use them as a stationary mug.

Aside from coffee, Fore Coffee also has bestseller tea recipes such as the Grand Wedding blend (which is always sure to sell out before evening) and Creme Caramel Tea, a rooibos blend. If you’re interested in a particular drink, make sure you come in early before they run out!

4. Tong Tji Tea House @ Lippo Mall Kramat Jati

Tong Tji, Indonesia’s long-standing and award-winning tea brand, opened its Tea Houses and Tea Barsin shopping malls across the country. Fans of authentic Indonesian tea can try out various heritage tea recipes in shops decorated in wooden furniture and fixtures that remind patrons of old houses in Central Java, as a reflection of the brand’s place of origin, Tegal.

We enjoy the classic tea selections such as Uwuh tea and Serai tea. Also, it feels aristocratic Traditional Javanese Tea using traditional Javanese clay tea sets. For newcomers to the Indonesian tea, we recommend that you try the sweet Tong Tji Originals like Jasmine Tea, Frussion Strawberry, and Frussion Peach, all favorites of Indonesian high school students. As for food, we recommend that you try their warm snacks like Tahu Pong and Tahu Mendoan. If you’re curious about what the classic Javanese cuisine tastes like, we recommend trying out the Tahu Telur. Whatever you choose, everything is affordable.
